Create Your Own HEAD Stand
Brought to you by John Cailey

Whether you are just doing a quick valve inspection or some full blown port work, the job becomes much easier when you can infinitely position those heads. If the heads you are working on have bolt holes on both ends that are located in the same position relative to each other, you can make a simple rotating "spit" that will greatly simplify the job at hand for very little $. These are the dimensions I used for small block Chrysler heads.
All sizes are nominal depending on the heads you are working on and the materails at hand. Support legs = 18" long 5/8" round stock. End plates = 9"x4"x3/16" thick flat stock. Holes = drill all holes 3/8". Make sure the pivot hole is high enough so that the head will clear the work bench thruogh 360 degrees of rotation. I used a second set of holes as a rotational lock mechanism. The radius distance from the pivot hole to the lock hole should be 1 & 5/16". When you have the 4 end plates cut, stack them and drill them all at the same time.
Once you have your head stands built, you can use them on many different types of heads by simply drilling additional holes as needed.
