Durango 5.2 & 5.9 Magnum

Engineered by Jim DiBiase, tweaked and typed by Dave Kanofsky

Hey late model Dakota and Durango 5.2 and 5.9L Magnum owners(and probably Ram, and maybe van) owners!

How does more power in the mid and top range, improved throttle response, better looks AND improved fuel economy for the price of induction noise (this is bad?), $30 in parts, and under 20 minutes installation sound? It's as easy as replacing the factory air intake system with a good old hot rod open element type air filter. It just so happens the throttle body throat is the same as a 4 barrel! Trans-Dapt p/n 2315 works perfectly. The bottom of the filter is dropped to be even with the carb sealing surface, the housing is 14" diameter and just clears everything (almost). It comes with a threaded rod, wing nut, and a crankcase vent port (all are necessary). Here's what ya gotta do: Remove the air pan hold down nut from the throttle body threaded shaft. Remove the crankcase vent hose. Remove the air box lid and filter. Remove the three air box hold down nuts. One is external to the box in the back, one is in the box under the filter towards the front, and one is outside and underneath the box near the horn. The one near the horn is virtually inaccessible, but is just a plastic nut that is easily pried off with a screwdriver. Pry off the plastic round head push in type fastener that holds the air inlet to the fender. Now the entire factory air inlet system will come right out.

The factory air pan hold down threaded shaft is not long enough, replace it with the one in the kit. The factory uses a carriage bolt through a sheetmetal bracket with a nylok nut. This assembly bolts to the throttle body. Remove the bracket from the throttle body and remove the carriage bolt. Use two nuts to hold the threaded rod supplied with the air filter to the sheet metal bracket (one on each side, coated with red locktite to prevent the bottom one from getting sucked into the motor). Bolt assembly back onto throttle body (See picture for completed assembly). Drop on the filter assembly, attach the crankcase vent hose, tighten the wing nut and go burn rubber!

The only interference is the upper radiator hose with the filter. Fabricate a protector of some type to prevent the hose from getting chewed up or shorten the hose a little at the radiator. You can replace the 14"x 2" paper element with a 14"x 3.0625" K&N, p/n E1650, (Mopar Performance p/n 4452077, about $33) and still maintain hood clearance. All parts are available from Chicago Connection (773) 229-0655.
