I'm hoping to get my 71 Scamp rolling again this summer, and one thing it needs is a seal on the power-steering gearbox.

I'm not sure if anything is else is worn out in the gearbox, but is it worth tearing into it myself? Any special tools needed? Can I get internals if anything is worn out?

Is it just better to shell out the cash for a re-man or upgraded firm-feel gear?

When the seal started leaking on my diesel my uncle said it was going to cost about 1/2 as much as a reman box to get a seal + labor to tear it apart. IMO I'd just get a reman box unless you want to learn how the boxes work.
